The 18th Godawari Flower Competitive Exhibition 2082 has begun in Lalitpur. Organized by the Floriculture Association Nepal, the exhibition will run until Kartik 2.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Govinda Prasad Sharma, Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, said that the government would work on policy facilitation to address the issues raised by entrepreneurs for the development and promotion of Nepal’s floriculture industry.
He praised the private sector’s independent efforts, stating, “The progress made in the floriculture business through private initiatives is commendable. Entrepreneurs should embrace global trends in floriculture and focus on quality self-regulation.”
Sharma further informed that the registration process of ornamental plants has started under the Seed and Seed Regulation implemented by the government. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to curb the illegal import of flowers and to encourage domestic producers.
“The Agriculture Bill has stalled due to the absence of parliament, but agricultural policies that include the interests of this sector have been drafted and are being prepared for submission to the Cabinet,” he said. “We are also working to introduce insurance policies to assess and mitigate business risks in floriculture.”
He also stressed the importance of controlling the use of plastic flowers and ensuring strict quarantine checks on imported agricultural and floral items to promote domestic flower businesses.
Meanwhile, Hemraj Dhakal, Vice President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and Chair of the Commodity Council, highlighted the need for better seed development and exhibition facilities to promote floriculture. He urged the government to create a secure and professional business environment.
Ravindra Thapa, Chief of the Flower Development Centre, said the exhibition would significantly contribute to promoting floriculture and creating employment opportunities.
Rajesh Bhakta Shrestha, President of the Floriculture Association Nepal, stated that the association has been organizing competitive flower exhibitions every year to promote the sector.
This year’s five-day exhibition features 90 stalls, with expected transactions exceeding NPR 4 million.
