A total of 34 candidates in Makwanpur have lost their election deposits after failing to secure even 10 percent of the valid votes in the House of Representatives election held on Falgun 21.
Among them, 18 candidates from Constituency No. 1 and 16 candidates from Constituency No. 2 had their deposits confiscated. Those losing their deposit include Dipak Bahadur Singh of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, who had won the previous election from Constituency No. 1. This time he received only 4,574 votes, failing to cross the 10 percent threshold. In the previous election, he had secured more than 27,000 votes.
In Constituency No. 1, a total of 23 candidates—13 from political parties and 10 independent candidates—competed in the election. Only five candidates managed to retain their deposits, including the winner Prakash Gautam of the Rastriya Swatantra Party. Others who saved their deposits were Mahalaxmi Upadhyay Dina of the Nepali Congress, Rameshwar Rana of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), Bijay Gautam of the Nepal Communist Party, and Surendra Lama of the Ujyalo Nepal Party.
In this constituency, 11 candidates failed to secure even 50 votes. Out of the total 95,310 votes cast in Makwanpur Constituency No. 1, 90,725 votes were valid.
Similarly, in Constituency No. 2, out of the 91,241 votes cast, 85,619 votes were valid. A total of 21 candidates—16 from political parties and five independents—competed in the constituency. Those who managed to retain their deposits were Prashant Upreti of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (winner), Mahesh Bartaula of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), Buddha Lama of the Nepali Congress, Labsher Bista of the Nepal Communist Party, and Prabin Kumar Syangtan of the Ujyalo Nepal Party.
According to election law, candidates who fail to obtain at least 10 percent of the total valid votes lose their deposit. The deposited amount of NPR 10,000 submitted during candidacy registration is then transferred to the state treasury.
