Kathmandu – Police have detained 50 individuals who attempted to stage a protest at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu without obtaining permission from the local administration.
Members of the GenZ United group had gathered at Maitighar from this morning to hold a demonstration. A team from the District Police Range, Kathmandu, took them into custody for investigation.
According to police, the protesters were detained because they attempted to organize a demonstration without prior approval from the local administration, and there was a possibility of confrontation with other GenZ groups, which could pose a security risk to the demonstrators themselves. Among those detained, 24 are women and 26 are men.
GenZ United leader Madan Karki stated that they had applied for permission at the District Administration Office (DAO), Kathmandu, to hold the protest peacefully, but their request was denied. He said the police action against peaceful demonstrators was undemocratic.
“We were trying to unite GenZ with a positive message. But we were stopped. We did not get permission from the District Administration Office, Kathmandu — it was not granted,” he said. (Note: The original statement mentions both Karki and Khanal, which needs clarification.)
