Election campaigning for the House of Representatives election has officially been allowed from today.
According to the legal provision, election-related rallies, mass meetings, corner assemblies, and publication or broadcast of election materials in the media are permitted only from 15 days before the voting date.
As per this rule, political parties and candidates can campaign from today until midnight of Falgun 18. It has been stated that parties, candidates, and all stakeholders must conduct campaigning with high priority on electoral integrity and full compliance with the election code of conduct. Within these rules, candidates are now formally allowed to ask voters for their support.
Election Commission Nepal said it has mobilized various mechanisms to implement and monitor the code of conduct. It clarified that it aims to avoid situations requiring legal action by first seeking clarifications from parties or candidates accused of violations.
The commission also reminded that the code of conduct was drafted after extensive consultations with political parties and stakeholders. All political parties have expressed commitment to fully comply with it.
Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari stated that the commission has adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward violations. Offenders may be asked for clarification, and depending on evidence and circumstances, penalties can range from warnings and fines to cancellation of candidacy.
Similarly, parties and candidates can advertise in newspapers and online media within set standards. When organizing assemblies or corner meetings, candidates must submit details of stage preparation and related expenses themselves or through representatives to the election office.
The commission also noted that during the election period, false information, disinformation, and hateful expressions spread via social media or online platforms with political motives, or intended to negatively affect the election or any party/candidate, will not be allowed.
