Companies affected during the Gen-Z protests of September 8–9 (Bhadra 23–24) have begun filing insurance claims in large numbers.
According to the Nepal Insurance Authority, as of September 16 (Bhadra 31), a total of 1,984 claims worth Rs 20.7 billion have been lodged with 18 non-life insurance companies, including micro-insurance providers.
The Oriental Insurance has received the highest number of claims, largely because the heavily damaged Bhatbhateni Superstore was insured under it. The company has received 40 claims worth Rs 5.41 billion.
Siddhartha Premier ranks second, with 258 claims amounting to Rs 4.93 billion, while Shikhar Insurance has recorded 366 claims worth Rs 2.39 billion.
Other companies, including IGI Prudential, Sagarmatha Lumbini, Himalayan Everest, and Neco Insurance, have each received claims exceeding Rs 1 billion. Meanwhile, 11 other insurers reported claims below Rs 1 billion.
During the protests, fires were set at numerous government offices and major private businesses across the country, with many suffering total losses. Since government offices were not insured, the Rs 20.7 billion in claims represents only damages to the private sector, the Authority said.
