Nepali Congress Taplejung has announced that it will recommend its candidate for the House of Representatives on Mangsir 25. District Secretary and Merindin Rural Municipality Chair Yukhhangbir (Dambar) Hangam informed that discussions, consultations, and feedback will be collected on Mangsir 23 and 24, and the candidate recommendation will be finalized on Mangsir 25.
Taplejung has one electoral constituency for the House of Representatives. According to the circular recently sent by Nepali Congress, the constituency-level committee must recommend the candidate and submit the name to the district committee by Mangsir 23.
The district committee must then forward the recommended names to the provincial committee by Mangsir 26, according to the circular. If the party fails to reach a unanimous decision, the circular instructs recommending three candidates, including at least one woman, in accordance with Article 33(2) and Article 69 of the party statute.
In the 2079 general election, UML Secretary Yogesh Kumar Bhattarai defeated the coalition candidate Khel Prasad Budhakshetri (Parag) of the Maoist Centre—supported by Nepali Congress, Maoist Centre, and Unified Socialist—by a margin of 208 votes, winning the House of Representatives seat.
Bhattarai secured 21,942 votes, while Budhakshetri received 21,738 votes. According to the District Election Office, 48,692 proportional votes were cast in Taplejung during the 2079 election. Among them, UML received 19,604, Nepali Congress 15,375, Maoist Centre 5,162, Unified Socialist 1,545, Rastriya Swatantra Party 978, Federal Democratic National Front 932, Janata Samajbadi Party 722, Rastriya Prajatantra Party 637, Rastriya Janamukti Party 330, and Mongol National Organization 125 votes.
