An agreement has been reached between KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital and the family of a woman who died during childbirth.
According to family members, the hospital has agreed to support the upbringing, healthcare, and education of the deceased woman’s children. The agreement was made during a discussion held at the Lalitpur District Administration Office in the presence of security officials, hospital representatives, and the victim’s family. The family stated that the hospital agreed to assist in raising the deceased woman’s nine-year-old daughter and newborn baby.
However, the hospital administration has clarified that it has agreed only to take responsibility for the medical treatment of the newborn baby, not full child care as claimed by the family.
The hospital stated it would provide free treatment for the newborn until the child exceeds the pediatric age.
KIST Hospital’s Chief Operating Officer Amis Pathak said there was no agreement regarding the children’s upbringing and education. He confirmed only free treatment for the newborn until the child passes the pediatric age. He also said that no financial compensation was included in the agreement, arguing that monetary settlements could lead to misuse of the deceased’s body.
According to the hospital, Minashree Rai died due to excessive bleeding after childbirth. However, the family accused the doctors of medical negligence, staged protests, and demanded action. On Monday, clashes broke out between the police and the victim’s relatives. Protesters vandalized the hospital, broke the main gate, and police were forced to use baton charge and fire 24 rounds of tear gas to bring the situation under control.
