An armed group carried out a robbery at the Nepal SBI Bank branch in Hayutar, Ghyanglekh Rural Municipality of Sindhuli district on Tuesday evening. According to police, around five masked robbers arrived in a Tata Sumo from the Banepa side, entered the bank, took security guards and staff under control, and fled after looting approximately NPR 30.7 million.
The robbers reportedly threatened the bank’s security guard at gunpoint, tied his hands and legs, and injured him with a khukuri. The well-organized robbery, in which bank employees and guards were held hostage, spread fear across the local area.
Following the incident, a joint effort by local residents and police led to the seizure of the Tata Sumo used in the robbery, bearing embossed number plate Ba 3 Da 0398, along with its driver. According to Ward Chairperson Roshan Bhlon of Ghyanglekh Rural Municipality–2, the vehicle was seized from the Tuni Bhanjyang area of Ward No. 1.
Police also recovered two sacks of cash that the robbers abandoned while fleeing. However, the exact amount recovered is yet to be confirmed. The seized vehicle and cash have been secured at the Bastipur Area Police Office.
Other suspects involved in the robbery managed to escape into a nearby forest. Police have launched an extensive search and cordon operation to track them down. The Sindhuli District Police Office has stated that a serious investigation is underway into the brutal incident, in which armed assailants entered the bank and held staff hostage. The injured security guard is undergoing treatment, and surveillance has been intensified at checkpoints in neighboring districts to arrest the fugitives.
