Nearly 40 people have been killed in a US military attack in Venezuela, according to a report by The New York Times.
The report states that on Saturday, the United States carried out attacks on several Venezuelan cities, including the capital Caracas, and took President Nicolás Maduro and his wife into custody. The US military reportedly transported them to New York, where they are being held in detention.
US President Donald Trump had earlier claimed that there were no human casualties during the operation.
However, in a report published on Sunday, The New York Times said the US military operation in Venezuela—allegedly aimed at “abducting” President Maduro—resulted in the deaths of both civilians and soldiers.
