Chairperson of Nepal Socialist Party (Naya Shakti), Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, has expressed his support for the ongoing protest of sugarcane farmers.
Speaking at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu, Dr. Bhattarai said the farmers’ demands are legitimate and criticized the government for arbitrarily cutting down subsidies promised to sugarcane farmers. He accused the government of injustice and exploitation, stating that not only was the subsidy reduced unilaterally, but the reduced amount has also not been provided on time.
He urged the agitating farmers to remain united and steadfast in their just demands.
Sugarcane farmers across the country, including those from Madhesh Province, have been staging protests demanding the continuation of the subsidy of Rs. 70 per quintal fixed by the government, along with payment of outstanding dues. Their agitation is focused on receiving the payments for the sugarcane supplied in the fiscal year 2081/082 (2024/25).
