The Bajura District Prison is facing severe overcrowding, with far more inmates than its original capacity. Built nearly 45 years ago without any expansion, the prison has struggled to manage the increasing number of prisoners, according to staff.
Although the prison was designed to hold only 25 inmates, it currently houses 65 prisoners, said prison administrator Anil Kumar Tiwari.
“The capacity is just 25, but we are forced to keep 65 inmates, making it very difficult for them to sleep and stay inside,” Tiwari explained. He added that not only inmates but also security personnel are facing problems due to a lack of proper quarters.
Tiwari expressed optimism that the situation would improve soon, as the tender process for a new prison building has already been completed. “Construction work will begin shortly, and the new facility will have the capacity to accommodate 100 inmates,” he said.
