Senior leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Balendra “Balen” Shah, has said that provincial structures must be strengthened in order to make federalism effective.
Speaking at the Parivartan Udgosh Sabha held in Janakpur today, Shah said federalism cannot function properly unless provinces are empowered. Shah reached Janakpur yesterday after resigning from the post of Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
He stated that questions are often raised in Kathmandu about RSP’s stance on federalism and stressed that provinces would only become strong when people no longer have to go to Kathmandu even to change a chief administrative officer in Birgunj.
“Kathmandu should be visited for sightseeing, for visiting Pashupatinath and Swayambhunath, not for demanding rights,” Shah said.
RSP has projected Balen Shah as its prime ministerial candidate, and he is contesting the upcoming House of Representatives election from Jhapa–5. The Madhesh-focused mass meeting was organized in the presence of party chair Ravi Lamichhane, senior leader Shah, and other leaders.
Addressing the same event, RSP leader Amresh Kumar Singh delivered a fiery speech, claiming that the Madheshi community now has an opportunity to become prime minister. Singh, who was previously an independent lawmaker, formally joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party earlier today.
