Another court in Bangladesh has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to five years in prison on charges of abuse of power and illegally acquiring government land in the capital, Dhaka.
According to local media reports, the court also issued sentences to her close family members:
- Sheikh Rehana (sister): 7 years’ rigorous imprisonment
- Tulip Rizwana Siddiq (daughter): 2 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of 100,000 taka
The verdict was delivered on Monday by the Special Judge Court in Dhaka, which sentenced a total of 17 individuals, including Hasina, Rehana, and Tulip.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had filed the case, accusing them of unlawfully acquiring government-owned land under the Purbachal New Town Project.
Additionally, former State Minister for Housing and Public Works Sharif Ahmed, along with 14 officials from the Public Works Ministry, Rajuk, and the Prime Minister’s Office, were also named as defendants.
Sheikh Hasina has previously received severe sentences in other cases, including:
- A death sentence in one case
- A 21-year prison sentence in another
The latest ruling has once again intensified political debate in Bangladesh regarding ongoing legal actions against Hasina.
