Bollywood’s beloved, versatile, and multi-generational superstar Dharmendra passed away on Monday at the age of 89. Known for his exceptional ability to shine equally in romance, comedy, and high-octane action blockbusters, he was regarded as one of Indian cinema’s most gifted performers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute through social media, writing, “Dharmendra ji’s demise marks the end of an era in Indian cinema. He was not only an iconic artist but a uniquely talented actor who brought depth, charm, and originality to every role.”
Dharmendra had been unwell in recent months and was admitted to a Mumbai hospital for treatment. Over a remarkable career spanning nearly six decades, he acted in around 300 films and even served as a Member of Parliament. He was also a recipient of one of India’s prestigious civilian honours.
In the 1980s, he earned the title “He-Man” for his long run of action-packed films. Before and after that era, his unforgettable performances contributed significantly to Bollywood’s rich legacy.
Among his most cherished roles, his portrayal of Veeru in the 1975 classic Sholay remains iconic. The character’s humour, energy, and generous heart continue to endear him to audiences across generations.
Father to six children, Dharmendra also played an active role in producing films featuring his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, helping continue the Deol family’s cinematic legacy.
His final performance will be seen in director Sriram Raghavan’s upcoming film “Ikkis,” scheduled for release next month.
