The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a case at the Special Court against Nepali Congress leader and former Member of Parliament Santosh Chalise on charges of amassing illegal assets.
According to Special Court Information Officer Yagya Raj Regmi, the CIAA on Sunday registered the case accusing Chalise of acquiring illicit property worth NPR 368,447,461.
Along with Chalise, the CIAA has named his wife Mandira Chalise, sons Sagar Chalise and Sandip Chalise, and daughter-in-law Pramila Pokharel as defendants in the case.
The commission has demanded confiscation of assets with undisclosed sources, a fine equivalent to the claimed amount, and imprisonment in line with the established loss. Regmi said the case registration process is currently underway.
Chalise was elected mayor of Gokarneshwar Municipality in Kathmandu in the 2017 local elections. The CIAA alleges that he accumulated illegal assets during his tenure as mayor.
In the 2022 general elections, Chalise was elected to the House of Representatives from Kathmandu Constituency No. 3 representing the Nepali Congress and later served as chairperson of the parliamentary Finance Committee. He is currently a former lawmaker.
