Clashes broke out among Gen Z protesters in Sundhara, Kathmandu, on Wednesday amid the power vacuum following Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation. Different youth groups gathered in the area, each claiming the right to lead a proposed interim government.
The Nepal Army stepped in to control the situation and began talks with the protesters. However, disputes arose as rival groups put forward competing claims of leadership within the Gen Z movement.
On Wednesday, the Army used loudspeakers outside its headquarters, asking groups to submit the names and contact details of their proposed “leaders.” Protesters were instructed to report on Thursday morning, and various groups arrived in Sundhara with their recommendations. But disagreements over who should head the interim government triggered confrontations.
Several groups have proposed different figures for the role of interim prime minister, including former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah, NEA Managing Director Kulman Ghising, and Dharan Mayor Harka Sampang.
As the Army restricted large gatherings near its headquarters, protesters shifted to Sundhara, where tensions escalated once again on Thursday.
