Continuous heavy rainfall has flooded several settlements across the Kathmandu Valley, with hundreds of residents forced to leave their homes.
Squatter settlements along the Bagmati River have been particularly hard hit as water entered homes, displacing large numbers of families. To mitigate risks, the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Army have been mobilized to evacuate affected settlements.
Security personnel are going door-to-door in flooded areas to assess conditions, assist families in moving to safer places, and help transfer belongings and valuables. According to the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range, water levels in the Bagmati, Manohara, and Bishnumati rivers are rising rapidly, putting nearby communities at high risk.
Officials reported that this rainfall system has sharply increased water flow in river basins across the Valley. Squatter settlements along the Bagmati River are the worst affected, with floodwaters rising to knee-level inside homes. Displaced families are being relocated to temporary shelters, with arrangements for food and health services.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast light to moderate rain for the next 24 hours, which may worsen risks. In response, the Home Ministry has instructed security agencies to remain on high alert and to immediately move residents from high-risk areas to safer locations. Local governments and disaster management committees are actively engaged in rescue and relief operations.
