CPN-UML leader Jitendra Narayan Dev has resigned from the party. Issuing a statement on Monday, Dev announced his decision to leave the UML.
In his statement, Dev said he was compelled to quit the party after it misinterpreted the Gen-Z movement of Bhadau 23 and 24 as a “foreign conspiracy” instead of understanding its real essence. He described the Gen-Z uprising as an outburst of public anger against long-standing issues such as poor governance, corruption, plunder, unemployment, and the large-scale migration of youth abroad.
Dev stated that rather than acknowledging these realities or attempting self-correction and reform within the party, the UML chose to label the movement as a foreign plot, promote personality cults, and run the party in an arbitrary and discriminatory manner. Expressing disagreement with such ideas, policies, and practices, he announced his decision to quit the CPN-UML effective immediately and made the matter public.
Dev had joined the UML on Asar 17, 2081, after previously being associated with the Nepali Congress. Within Congress, he had come through the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Democratic), formerly led by Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar, which later merged into the Nepali Congress.
Despite his recent affiliations, Dev’s political roots lie in the left movement. He began his political career with the UML in 2049 BS and later served as a National Assembly member from the Nepali Congress.
