A faction led by former president Sher Bahadur Deuba and leader Shekhar Koirala of the Nepali Congress has decided to convene a separate Central Working Committee meeting.
The decision was made during a meeting held in Dhumbarahi on Sunday, attended by former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka, Dr. Koirala, and other leaders who were part of the central committee and executive committee elected from the party’s 14th General Convention.
According to leader Min Bishwakarma, the meeting decided to call a session of the central committee elected from the 14th General Convention to review the election results. The date for the meeting will be finalized through mutual understanding.
The leaders also plan to discuss the party’s future strategy. This move by the Deuba–Koirala faction is likely to further intensify internal disputes within the party.
Previously, despite opposition from both factions, a special general convention held from Poush 27–30 had elected a new committee under the leadership of Gagan Thapa. Rejecting that outcome, the Deuba and Koirala groups had filed a petition at the Supreme Court of Nepal, which is still under consideration.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission Nepal has already recognized Thapa’s leadership as official. The party, under his leadership, recently faced electoral defeat, and a central committee meeting is already underway since Friday to review the results—making this parallel decision by the rival faction particularly significant.
