The dispute within the Nepali Congress regarding the timing of the General Convention has intensified, prompting party president Sher Bahadur Deuba to take an active role in resolving the issue.
Returning from Singapore after 18 days of medical treatment, Deuba began meeting leaders from Saturday to initiate dialogue for a settlement.
Since he had assigned the responsibility of Acting President to Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka, Deuba has been engaging in informal discussions instead of formal meetings.
On Saturday morning, Khadka briefed Deuba about the disagreements raised during the month-long Central Committee meeting. Following the briefing, Deuba met spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, NP Saud, and others, advising them to move forward in unity.
Deuba is also preparing to meet seven senior leaders from the establishment faction on Sunday—Bimalendra Nidhi, Gopal Man Shrestha, Bijay Kumar Gachhadar, Prakash Man Singh, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Dr. Shashank Koirala, and Dr. Mahat.
These leaders are in favor of holding the General Convention only after the House of Representatives election.
However, the group led by Dr. Shekhar Koirala, Gagan Thapa, and Bishwo Prakash Sharma is firm that the convention should be held before the election.
This disagreement has kept the Central Committee meeting, which started on Ashoj 28, inconclusive.
After Deuba suggested moving forward collectively on Saturday, Acting President Khadka held discussions at the Himalayan Hotel with Gagan Thapa, Bishwo Prakash Sharma, Mahendra Yadav, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Bimalendra Nidhi, Ramesh Lekhak, and Dhanraj Gurung. However, no consensus was reached, and the dispute remains unresolved, a participating leader said.
