Gopal Hamal, Mayor of Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City, has congratulated Sushila Karki on her appointment as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister.
In a video message shared on social media, Hamal highlighted several key demands for the new government, with a strong focus on controlling corruption. He stated, “Without tackling corruption, there can be no good governance. Without good governance, the country cannot progress.”
Hamal urged Prime Minister Karki to take action within a week against corrupt individuals, including filing charges, nationalizing their assets, and ensuring legal proceedings leading to imprisonment. He emphasized that this was also a central issue of the recent Janjagriti (Jenji) movement.
He further raised concerns about discrepancies in the reported number of martyrs and the status of those injured during protests, requesting the government to provide accurate data and updates on ongoing medical care.
Excerpt from Hamal’s Message:
“First, I want to congratulate Honorable Mrs. Sushila Karki on her appointment as Prime Minister. She has made history, being Nepal’s first female Prime Minister as well as having previously served as the first female Chief Justice.
Now it is time to create history. The main challenge facing our country—unemployment and lack of rule of law—stems from corruption. This was also the core issue of the Jenji movement. Without addressing corruption, there can be no good governance, and without good governance, the country cannot progress.
Therefore, within a week, I request that corrupt individuals face charges, their assets be nationalized, and proper legal action be taken, including imprisonment.
I also urge the government to clarify the actual number of martyrs and provide information about the injured, including their treatment status. Transparency in these matters is essential to restore public confidence.”
Hamal concluded by extending his best wishes for the success of the interim government in addressing these challenges.
