Health and education activist Dr. Govinda KC has launched a three-day satyagraha (peaceful protest) in Geta, Kailali, demanding the improvement of medical education and healthcare quality, equitable access to services, and peace in conflict-affected regions. The campaign, which will run until September 2 (Bhadra 17), aims to pressure the government to implement past agreements and withdraw controversial decisions.
Dr. KC criticized the Medical Education Commission and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli for their direct intervention in increasing seat quotas in private medical colleges, calling it an irresponsible move. “This decision, which goes against the spirit of the Medical Education Act, not only undermines the quality of education but also negatively impacts public health,” he said in a statement.
His demands include:
- Immediate withdrawal of the decision to increase private medical college seats.
- Establishment of government medical colleges and hospitals in Ilam, Udayapur, and Dadeldhura.
- Immediate launch of academic and hospital services at Geta Medical College.
Dr. KC also voiced concerns over Nepal’s Lipulekh region, accusing India and China of making trade agreements on encroached territory. He stressed that the encroachment must be stopped and Nepal’s land should be restored.
In addition, he condemned the Russia-Ukraine war and Israel’s attacks on Gaza, labeling them crimes against humanity. “This satyagraha is a call to reclaim encroached Nepali land in Lipulekh and to establish peace in war-torn regions,” he stated.
Warning that deteriorating standards in medical education directly harm public healthcare, Dr. KC said the decision to increase seat quotas serves the interests of mafias and political leaders while putting education and people’s health at risk. He urged the government and relevant authorities to uphold past agreements and strictly implement the Medical Education Act.
