Nepali Congress leader and House of Representatives candidate from Morang Constituency No. 6, Shekhar Koirala, is currently engaged in meeting locals and gauging public sentiment in the inner settlements and neighborhoods of Biratnagar as part of his election campaign.
During his visit to Brahmapura Tole in Biratnagar–6, Koirala acknowledged that areas west of the canal have lagged behind in development compared to the city’s main zones. He pledged to give special priority to the development of this region.
Speaking with residents, he said, “The western canal area of Biratnagar still looks like a village. Accelerating development here will be my first priority.” He emphasized that the proper development of inner wards 6, 5, 4, 11, and 12 is the foundation for the overall progress of Biratnagar. Stressing the need for concrete action, he added, “It is now time not just for speeches, but to deliver results.”
Koirala also promised to take immediate steps toward a long-term solution to the landless settlers’ (sukumbasi) issue. “Within two to three days, I will send members of the Landless Commission here to sit with you and find a solution together,” he assured residents, raising new hopes among the local community.
Regarding flood control, he informed that the process for constructing embankments along the Keshalia and Budhikhola rivers is moving forward. “The DPR for the Keshalia embankment has already been completed. Once the tender process is finalized, work will begin, and local residents will be given priority in employment,” he said.
Former Chief Minister of Koshi Province, Kedar Karki, also addressed the gathering in the Maithili language, highlighting Koirala’s personality and commitment to development. Karki stated, “Dr. Shekhar Koirala is your companion in both joy and sorrow. Electing him means securing a brighter future for Biratnagar.”
Koirala further pledged to complete previously inaugurated projects, including a hospital and a senior citizens’ building, which were delayed due to budget constraints. He also claimed that the expansion of the Ring Road and development of provincial infrastructure would transform the area into a new modern hub of Biratnagar.
Contesting the election from this constituency for the fifth time, Koirala has already been elected three times in the past. However, many voters appear less enthusiastic about traditional leaders and parties this time. According to Nepali Congress Biratnagar Metropolitan Committee President Deepak Chapagain, the atmosphere has begun to shift gradually as leaders step into local communities.
