More than 70 people were killed in a drone strike on a mosque in Sudan’s Darfur region on Friday. The attack took place in al-Fashir city, where the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are suspected to be responsible, though the group has not claimed responsibility.
The RSF has been engaged in a two-year-long war with the Sudanese army and is reportedly tightening its grip on the ground in an attempt to seize full control of al-Fashir—the army’s last stronghold in Darfur. Over 300,000 civilians are believed to be trapped in the city.
The drone struck during morning prayers, killing dozens instantly. According to medical sources, around 20 people were injured, while efforts to recover bodies from the mosque’s rubble are still underway.
