The Election Commission has allocated election symbols to political parties participating in the proportional representation system for the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21.
According to the Commission, the parties were officially registered and provided with their election symbols on Friday. Assistant Election Officer Yagya Prasad Bhattarai said that applications to take part in the proportional representation election were submitted over three days—Mangsir 21, 22, and 23.
Although 100 political parties applied to participate in the proportional representation system, the total number of election symbols has been fixed at 93, as two or more parties applied to contest under a single, common symbol in some cases. The Commission stated that symbols were allocated based on the proportional votes received in the 2079 House of Representatives election, while other parties were assigned symbols according to their registration order.
Accordingly, the Commission assigned the Sun as the first symbol, Tree as the second, Five-Pointed Star as the third, Bell as the fourth, Plough as the fifth, Tilted Umbrella as the sixth, and Loudspeaker as the seventh. Other approved symbols include a plain basket with a base, bicycle, madal drum, glass, walking stick, open single eye, deer, folded hands in greeting, rooster, water pot, glove mark, well, bamboo basket, sickle and star, lotus flower, guitar, house, and sickle.
The Nepal Federal Socialist Party, Bahujan Ekata Party Nepal, and Nepal Janajagrati Party have been jointly allotted the single symbol of a bus. Similarly, the Rastriya Mukti Party Nepal, Janata Samajwadi Party, and Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal have received the grinding stone (chakki/janto) as a common symbol. The Nepal Communist Party (Marxist) and Nepal Communist Party have been allotted the spade, while the Sachet Nepali Party and Nagarik Sarvochchata Party Nepal have received the lion with a fort as their shared election symbol, according to the Commission.
