The Election Commission has sought an explanation from Surendra Bhandari, a candidate of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) from Kathmandu-4, regarding his remarks during the ongoing campaign for the upcoming House of Representatives election.
A complaint has been filed against him, alleging violation of Section 4 (c) of the Election Code of Conduct, 2082, for making offensive statements targeting gender and sexual minorities and spreading misinformation in society. The complaint also demanded the immediate cancellation of his candidacy and the strictest possible action.
The Commission, citing audio-visual evidence of his statements, asked Bhandari whether he indeed made expressions that could hurt or defame senior citizens, women, sexual minorities, and persons with disabilities, which would be in violation of the Election Code of Conduct. The letter further asked why he should not be penalized under the relevant election laws if such a violation occurred.
Bhandari has been asked to submit a clear response within three days of receiving the notice.
