An electric crematorium has been inaugurated at Devghat Dham, led by the Devghat Area Development Committee, Tanahun.
According to the committee, 20 to 30 bodies from districts including Tanahun, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi are brought to Devghat daily for cremation. The electric crematorium has been introduced to ensure smooth operation even during rainy weather and to speed up the cremation process. Previously, traditional wood-based cremations caused deforestation and pollution of the river, prompting the construction of this eco-friendly facility.
The operation responsibility has recently been transferred to the local municipality. The infrastructure, managed by Bharatpur Metropolitan City, includes the crematorium building, waiting hall, bus park, terminal building, and footpaths.
The crematorium building features:
- Two electric cremation machines on the first floor,
- Office, waiting hall, and ‘Machury’ room (for ritual preparations),
- Restrooms, bathing facilities, and other necessary amenities.
Each electric cremation machine can cremate a body within 90 minutes.
Project head Jhapat Bahadur Thapa stated that the total project cost is approximately Rs. 33.8 million, and the facility will receive support for operation and maintenance for one year. The metropolitan city will manage the operations with trained personnel.
During the inauguration, the mayor and deputy mayor highlighted that the project is effective and results-oriented, and they committed to expanding urban infrastructure in line with the concept of a model city in the future.
