An explosion occurred on Thursday during a New Year’s Eve event at the Swiss alpine ski resort of Crans-Montana in Switzerland. Swiss police have confirmed that at least 47 people were killed and 115 others injured in the incident. According to police, the victims include citizens of multiple countries.
Speaking at a press conference this morning, police said the explosion took place at around 1:30 AM at the resort’s Constellation Bar. However, the number of fatalities was not disclosed at that time.
Following the incident, the city of Crans-Montana was declared a no-fly zone. Police and emergency response teams rushed to the scene and immediately began rescue operations. The injured were taken to hospitals, where doctors said facilities are filled with burn victims, many of whom are in critical condition.
The incident site, Crans-Montana, is located about 100 kilometers from Interlaken, a popular tourist destination known for adventure sports. Tourists from around the world visit the area for paragliding, skiing, and trekking. Interlaken, situated between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, offers easy access to the Alpine peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.
According to the Swiss news outlet Blick, the explosion and subsequent fire may have been caused by fireworks set off during a concert.
As soon as information about the incident was received, police, fire brigade, and ambulance teams were deployed to the scene. The explosion site and surrounding areas have been sealed off as investigations continue.
