Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal has announced that the reconstruction of key government structures damaged during the GenZ movement will begin within two months, utilizing the current fiscal year’s budget.
Speaking at a meeting of the National Concerns and Federal Strengthening Committee under the National Assembly held at Singha Durbar on Tuesday, Minister Khanal said preliminary estimates suggest that the government sustained around NPR 100 billion in damages from arson and vandalism during the movement.
He informed that NPR 80 million has been collected in the reconstruction fund established for repairing structures damaged during the protests.
Khanal stated that the government has reprioritized the budget, cutting funding for smaller projects and allocating resources toward strategic infrastructures such as the Postal Highway, Mid-Hill Highway, and BP Highway.
He further noted that in line with the GenZ movement’s demands for efficient budget utilization, the government has implemented measures to enhance public expenditure management and cost-control standards, adding that overall revenue collection has increased despite a reduction in income tax rates.
