Finance Minister Rameshwar Khanal has said that no one should be criminalized through street protests. Speaking at the 29th Annual General Assembly of the Society of Economic Journalists–Nepal (SEJON) on Monday, he stated that anyone who commits wrongdoing will be punished according to the law.
He highlighted that private businesses often get targeted during movements and warned that attacking anyone’s property is unacceptable in a rule-based state. Whether created by Nepalis or foreigners, he said, all investments ultimately become assets of the country.
Khanal noted that many foreign investments made in the past have eventually come under the ownership of Nepali entrepreneurs and the Government of Nepal.
The minister emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring a secure environment for investors. If an investor commits any wrongdoing, legal action will be taken according to the law, he said, but stressed that declaring someone a criminal on the streets and attacking private property is not permissible.
He also remarked that misinformation contributes to rising criminal activities, adding that information must be disseminated with seriousness and responsibility.
