The parapet and floodlights constructed at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground have been officially handed over to the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN).
The Federal Secretariat Construction and Management Office under the Ministry of Urban Development handed the structures to CAN through the National Sports Council (NSC). Urban Development and Energy Minister Kulman Ghising pressed the switch to inaugurate the floodlights and formally hand them over to CAN on Sunday evening.
During the program, Minister Ghising said that the TU Cricket Stadium is one of the fastest-completed projects in Nepal. He also stated that the government has already approved a master plan worth Rs 10 billion for the second phase of development, including beginning the procurement process.
CAN President Chatur Bahadur Chand said that the upgraded TU Cricket Stadium marks the beginning of fulfilling Nepali cricket fans’ long-held dream of watching international-level cricket within the country. This is the first time in Nepal that a stadium has been rebuilt with a modern parapet and six floodlights. The handover comes on the eve of the second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL).
The TU cricket ground, originally used as an internal sports field of the university, began its development as an international cricket venue in 1998 (2055 BS). As public interest in cricket grew, the KP Oli–led government decided in Mangsir 2081—through its first Cabinet decision—to upgrade the stadium with modern parapets and floodlights.
Under the first phase of construction, a parapet with a seating capacity of 10,000 spectators was built, along with six floodlights enabling night-time matches. According to the government’s master plan, the second phase will expand the stadium to accommodate 25,000 spectators and include all modern international-standard cricket facilities.
