Former Acting President of the Nepali Congress, Purna Bahadur Khadka, has decided not to contest the House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21.
Although Khadka will not run in the election himself, he has instructed leaders and cadres close to him to contest the polls from within the party under the party’s election symbol, the tree, and to move forward through dialogue with the newly elected executive committee led by Gagan Thapa.
Explaining his decision to his group, Khadka said that while he was serving as acting party president, issues that should have been resolved through dialogue were taken to disputes and confrontations, and therefore, on moral grounds, he could not contest the election.
Candidate registration for the House of Representatives election will take place tomorrow. In preparation, the Nepali Congress is holding meetings of its parliamentary board to finalize candidates. Party leaders have indicated that candidates close to former president Sher Bahadur Deuba are also likely to receive tickets. The board meeting is currently underway, and today’s meeting is expected to finalize candidates for all constituencies.
