Bhaktapur — Chairman of Communist Party of Nepal (UML) and former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has been arrested from his residence.
According to Superintendent of Police Surya Bahadur Khadka, Oli was taken into custody early Saturday morning from a rented house in Gundhu, Suryabinayak Municipality–7, Bhaktapur.
A team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, led by SP Khadka, reached Gundhu at around 5:00 AM and arrested Oli before taking him to Kathmandu for further investigation.
Earlier the same morning, police had also arrested former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak from his residence in Katunje, Bhaktapur.
Both leaders have been detained in connection with the deadly Gen-Z protests held on Bhadra 23, during which 19 people lost their lives. Authorities have launched a criminal investigation into their alleged involvement in the incident.
A commission formed under the leadership of Gauri Bahadur Karki had recommended legal action against Oli and Lekhak. Based on the report submitted on Chaitra 24, the Cabinet meeting held on Friday decided to implement the recommendations and proceed with criminal cases against them.
