Sudan Gurung, a founder figure in Nepal, has announced his intention to contest the upcoming House of Representatives election from Gorkha Constituency No. 1.
Through social media, he stated, “I want to formally announce my candidacy for the upcoming House of Representatives election from Gorkha-1. The beginning of change from my own village, my own soil. New energy, new faces, a new Nepal.”
Following public questions regarding his citizenship, Gurung visited his native village, Chumnubri in Gorkha, met with locals, and submitted an application to have his citizenship verified.
He has not specified which party he will represent in the election. However, recently he has played a role in fostering unity among Kathmandu mayor Balen Shah, Kulman Ghising, and the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
In the previous election, Gorkha-1 saw a coalition between Nepali Congress and the then-Maoist Centre. From this alliance, Congress candidate Rajendra Bajgain was elected as the Member of Parliament, winning by a margin of 16,643 votes.
Bajgain had secured 33,428 votes, while his closest competitor, Ramsharan Basnet of CPN-UML, received 16,785 votes.
