Gagan Thapa has resigned from the post of president of the Nepali Congress, taking moral responsibility for his unexpected defeat in the recent House of Representatives election.
Thapa submitted his resignation to Vice President Bishwo Prakash Sharma on Wednesday, although the party has yet to make an official announcement regarding the development.
In the Falgun 21 election, Thapa contested from Sarlahi–4 but lost by a significant margin to Amaresh Kumar Singh. Singh secured 35,688 votes, while Thapa received 22,831 votes. Following the result, Thapa had been preparing to step down, though party leaders had urged him to reconsider.
Thapa was elected party president during the special general convention held from Poush 27 to 30 at Bhrikutimandap.
Currently, the Nepali Congress holds a total of 38 seats in the House of Representatives—18 under the direct system and 20 under proportional representation.
A central working committee meeting scheduled for Friday will review the election results and discuss Thapa’s resignation.
