Former Prime Minister and Chairman of CPN-UML, KP Sharma Oli, is undergoing gallbladder surgery today.
Doctors involved in his treatment had earlier fixed today’s date for the operation. As per the schedule, Oli has been taken to the operation theatre. A medical team led by Dr. Paleswan Joshi Lakhey is performing the procedure to remove a 22 mm gallstone from his gallbladder.
Oli had been admitted to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital since the day of his arrest, which came a day after the formation of the new government, on allegations related to the suppression of a protest movement.
Following his arrest, his wife Radhika Shakya filed a habeas corpus petition at the Supreme Court of Nepal, claiming he was being held in unlawful detention.
The Supreme Court, on Chaitra 23, ordered authorities to complete the investigation against Oli and the then Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak by Chaitra 26. The court also directed that if the investigation could not be completed by then, Oli should be released under conditions.
Accordingly, police released him into the custody of his wife from the hospital. Although freed from detention, he remained hospitalized due to the scheduled surgery.
