
Young protesters from Gen Z, who took to the streets against the social media ban and corruption, have urged people to return home safely. Gen Z Nepal announced through social media that the protest had gotten out of control and called on everyone to disperse immediately.
The statement read:
“Please leave the area safely and as quickly as possible. Various vested groups are inciting the crowd. Our protest today has been successful. Please return home safely.”
After the protest escalated, the District Administration Office of Kathmandu imposed a curfew in the Banishwar area. The curfew is in effect from 12:30 PM to 10 PM on Monday.
The administration specified that the curfew covers the following areas:
- Banishwar Chowk to West Everest Hotel to Bijulibazar Bridge
- Banishwar Chowk to Purmin Bhawan, Shantinagar to Three-Kune Chowk
- Banishwar Chowk to North iPlex Mall to Ratnarajya Secondary School
- Banishwar Chowk to South Shankhamul Uphill to Shankhamul Bridge
Earlier, Gen Z protesters who demonstrated against social media restrictions and corruption had entered the Parliament building, resulting in clashes with police. To control the crowd, the police used tear gas and water cannons.
The protest began at Maiti Ghar and moved toward Banishwar, demanding the restoration of social media services, which were shut down after the government’s registration deadline passed, and an end to corruption.
