The government has reversed its earlier decision on the installation of embossed number plates. The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has issued a statement clarifying that embossed number plates are now voluntary, not mandatory as previously announced.
The department explained that while the system for installing embossed number plates had been made compulsory during vehicle registration, transfer, and renewal, it was based on the Transport Management Act, 2049, Transport Management Regulations, 2054, and cabinet decisions.
The DoTM clarified that no fines or penalties will be imposed for failing to install the plates by Ashoj 1, and vehicle owners can choose to install them at a convenient time.
Concerns that embossed plate data could fall into foreign hands and pose a national security risk were described as rumors. The statement emphasized that all data related to embossed plates is securely stored at the Department of Transport Management’s Data Security Center.
