The government has decided that social media platforms must be registered within seven days. Announcing the decisions of the Cabinet meeting held on Bhadra 9, Government Spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, shared the information.
In compliance with the Supreme Court’s directive, social media platforms are required to be listed at the Ministry of Communication within seven days. If they fail to register within the specified timeframe, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority will be directed to deactivate them in Nepal.
Minister Gurung stated, “As per the Social Media Operation Directive 2080 and the order of the Supreme Court, social media operators have been given a seven-day deadline to register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to ensure accountability and responsibility. If a platform fails to register or does not even contact for registration within the given period, the Ministry will instruct the Nepal Telecommunications Authority to gradually deactivate the platform in Nepal. However, once registered, such platforms will be immediately reactivated.”
The Cabinet made ten decisions in its meeting on Bhadra 9, and Minister Gurung made them public on Wednesday during a regular press briefing.
