Dr. Sarvesh Sharma, Director of the National Centre for AIDS and STD Control, has shared an updated overview of the HIV/AIDS situation across Nepal. Speaking at a press interaction organized on the occasion of World AIDS Day, he said that the Kathmandu Valley has the highest number of people taking HIV/AIDS and STI-related medication.
Dr. Sharma highlighted that the HIV infection rate in Madhes Province is continuously increasing, adding that the overall health condition of the province remains weak. He said the centre plans to prioritize Madhes Province this year while implementing health programs.
According to the data presented, Lumbini Province stands third in terms of HIV prevalence, while Karnali Province has the lowest. He added that the number of people taking HIV medication in Karnali and Sudurpaschim is comparatively low.
He explained, “The highest number of people taking HIV and STI medicines are in the Kathmandu Valley. Madhes stands second, where HIV cases are rising. The health condition in Madhes is generally weak, so we are focusing our programs there this year. Lumbini is third, and Karnali has the lowest prevalence, with fewer people taking HIV medication in both Karnali and Sudurpaschim.”
This year’s World AIDS Day theme, “Let Communities Lead: Overcome Barriers, Transform AIDS Response,” emphasizes the need for stronger and more inclusive action. Dr. Sharma said that despite ongoing challenges, an effective response is essential. He also stressed the importance of extending services more efficiently to the grassroots level.
“Our slogan this year calls for overcoming barriers and transforming the AIDS response,” he said. “We face many challenges, but we must continue working actively in the fight against AIDS. The Centre has been carrying out various activities throughout the year, and in the days ahead, we must deliver services more effectively to the people on the ground.”
