The Fagu festival, popularly known as Holi, officially began on Tuesday across Nepal. In Kathmandu, the celebrations were inaugurated at Hanumandhoka, Basantapur, with the erection of the traditional three-tiered Chir (ceremonial pole).
The Chir was decorated with colorful flags and banners, and the ceremony commenced at 7:13 AM with traditional music and festivities. Holi is celebrated from Fagu Shukla Ashtami to Fagu Shukla Purnima, with this year’s main festival days falling on Fagu 18 and 19. Public holidays for Holi have been observed on the 18th in the hilly and Himalayan districts and on the 19th in the Terai districts.
