Karnali Province Chief Minister Yam Lal Kandel has urged not to view the incidents of arson, looting, and theft during the Gen-Z movement from a political lens.
During a meeting in Surkhet today with Bishweshwar Prasad Bhandari, a member of the probe commission formed to study the damages caused on September 9 during the Gen-Z protests, Chief Minister Kandel called for an impartial investigation and study. He suggested that the commission reveal the facts and truth about the damage caused to both public and private property in the name of protests.
Chief Minister Kandel recalled that despite past political and people’s movements, private property was never targeted with arson or looting. “If crimes are covered up in the name of politics, it weakens the rule of law and creates the risk of growing anarchy,” he warned. “This may ultimately put citizens at risk.”
He stressed the need for strict legal action against anyone involved in criminal activities, regardless of who they are. He said future incidents of this nature can only be prevented if the probe commission and police administration bring the guilty to justice through factual and impartial investigation. According to him, failure to do so would only encourage criminal elements.
Probe commission member Bhandari said that incidents of burning private houses will be clearly studied as criminal activities. He stated that acts such as arson, looting, and theft of personal property cannot be considered political.
Similarly, Superintendent of Police Sudhir Raj Shahi of the District Police Office, Surkhet, informed that photographic and video evidence related to the incidents of arson, looting, and theft in Surkhet has been collected. He said identification of those involved is in the final stage and legal action will begin within a few days.
