The Environment Management Department of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has announced a ban on burning plastic, plastic products, and waste in open spaces. The decision was made after observing an increase in the burning of such materials in open areas with the onset of colder weather.
During the winter season, air pollution levels in the Kathmandu Valley tend to rise significantly, and open burning of waste contributes heavily to the problem. Department Chief Sarita Rai stated, “This decision has been made to reduce the adverse effects on public health and the environment.”
Air pollution particularly affects children, the elderly, individuals suffering from respiratory diseases like asthma, patients with heart problems, and those with chronic illnesses. To protect the health of city residents and the environment, the department has urged the public to stop open burning that emits smoke.
Rai further warned that anyone found violating the ban will face legal action under the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Environment and Natural Resource Conservation Act, 2077 and the Fiscal Act, 2082. Offenders will be fined Rs. 10,000 for each violation.
