Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has launched the ‘Silver Volunteer Program’ to utilize the knowledge, skills, and expertise of experienced citizens above the age of 45 for societal and urban development.
Vivek Bastola, a member of the KMC Urban Planning Commission Secretariat, explained that the program aims to provide opportunities for citizens with extensive professional experience to contribute to the development of society and the nation even after retirement.
Bastola said, “Are you 45 years or older? Have you retired from your job or business? If you wish to contribute to society rather than just rest after retirement, come forward and join hands in the development of the metropolitan city.”
Through this program, volunteers can work with KMC in areas such as education, health, sanitation, environment, administration, urban development, and heritage conservation.
KMC has called for applications in accordance with the ‘KMC Silver Volunteer Guidelines’, allowing eligible citizens to apply online.
The eligibility criteria for the program include:
- Nepali citizens, non-resident Nepalis, or foreign nationals with legal approval, aged between 45 and 74 years.
- At least 20 years of professional experience in a government, private, or non-governmental organization in a relevant field.
- Willingness to serve a minimum of five hours per week for one year.
- Physically and mentally fit to volunteer, fully committed to voluntary service, and ready to work in assigned areas.
- Ability to perform responsibilities diligently and produce results, no criminal record, legally eligible, and meeting other criteria set by the committee.
According to KMC, the program will help utilize the experience of mature citizens in nation-building while providing them satisfaction and opportunities through social service.
