A massive landslide along the Hungung section of the Koshi Highway in Bhotkhola has blocked traffic for the past three days.
The 115-kilometer stretch connecting Khandbari to the Kimathanka border point has been completely shut since Thursday after the landslide struck. According to Ram Bahadur Gurung, chief of the North-South Koshi Road Project, around 300 meters of roadway has been buried under a mix of rocks, soil, and shrubs, along with part of the hillside. “Since the road is still under construction, using heavy machinery is not possible. The steep terrain and continuous rainfall have made the work even more challenging,” he explained.
The blockage has disrupted the supply of daily essentials, fuel, construction materials, and other goods. Passengers have also been stranded due to the highway closure. Gurung noted that while landslides occur in this region every monsoon, this year’s incident is exceptionally massive. With clearance efforts still underway, officials said it remains uncertain when the highway will reopen.
