The Lumbini Province Government has announced a public holiday on the occasion of the Tharu community’s Barka Atwari festival, which falls on Sunday, September 8 (Bhadra 8).
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law, the holiday will be observed in districts with a significant Tharu population — Dang, Banke, Bardiya, Kapilvastu, Rupandehi, and West Nawalparasi.
On this festival, Tharu men traditionally observe a day-long fast and worship the Sun.
