CPN (Maoist Center) General Secretary Dev Gurung has said that although the 2007 Gaur massacre may appear to have had a political character, encirclement and mass killings should never have occurred.
Referring to Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP-N) Chair Upendra Yadav’s claim that the incident was political in nature, Gurung demanded an impartial and independent judicial investigation. He added that Yadav had been leading the then Madhesi People’s Rights Forum at the time and that the National Human Rights Commission report had also pointed toward his involvement.
Gurung further remarked that the recent Supreme Court ruling has raised suspicions due to its timing. He suggested that JSP-N’s dissatisfaction with the government’s land bill and its subsequent withdrawal from the coalition might indicate that the verdict was linked to political retaliation.
He emphasized that while the Maoist Center would accept the court’s decision, judicial bodies must act fairly and independently.
