Martyrs’ Week has begun across the country from today in memory of the great martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the establishment of democracy and civil liberties during Nepal’s various political movements.
The week-long observance marks the historic day of Magh 10, 1997 BS, when the then Rana rulers executed Shukraraj Shastri by hanging him from a tree at Pachali in Teku, Kathmandu. On this occasion, Acting Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol paid floral tributes at Shastri’s statue in Teku this morning, expressing high respect for his contribution.
As part of the week-long programs, special events will be organized on Magh 13 at Sifal in remembrance of Dharmabhakta Mathema, and on Magh 15 at Shobhabhagwati to commemorate the executions of Dasharath Chand and Gangalal Shrestha. These four brave sons of the nation sacrificed their lives within a span of ten days for raising their voices against the autocratic regime.
Martyrs’ Week, which began on Magh 10, will be observed for seven days with various creative and commemorative programs and will conclude with the celebration of Martyrs’ Day on Magh 16.
