Tirtharaj Bhattarai, the Mayor of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality, has ended his hunger strike after signing a 16-point agreement on Sunday.
Mayor Bhattarai had come to Kathmandu to protest under the slogan: “Let’s mitigate the effects of global climate change, use forest-friendly and eco-friendly materials.” He had begun a hunger strike at Maitighar in Kathmandu to draw attention to his demands.
The agreement was reached following discussions between Bhattarai’s dialogue team and government representatives. The hunger strike officially ended in the presence of Minister for Forests and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi.
Among the key agreements were: promoting bamboo use by finalizing and approving the Bamboo Building Code and norms from the Ministry of Urban Development within 45 days; requesting the other two levels of government to support bamboo promotion; and developing Khotang as the “Capital of Bamboo.”
Altogether, both sides reached a consensus on 16 different points.
