Minister for Youth and Sports Bablu Gupta has taken a firm stance that he will resign only after completing his scheduled visit to the United States.
Following Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s directive asking ministers actively involved in party politics to step down, Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Urban Development Kulman Ghising resigned from his post. In the same cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister had also asked Minister Gupta and Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel to submit their resignations.
While Minister Kharel has clarified that he is not affiliated with any political party and has no plans to contest elections, and therefore will not resign, Minister Gupta has signaled his intention to enter active politics and step down from office.
Sources close to Gupta say he is preparing for a pre-scheduled visit to the United States and has decided to submit his resignation only after returning to Nepal. According to the source, this position has already been communicated to the Prime Minister, who has agreed to the arrangement.
Gupta, who was seen alongside Kulman Ghising during discussions on unity between Ghising’s party and the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), is believed to be preparing to join active politics through either Kulman Ghising’s or Balen Shah’s camp within the RSP. His resignation is expected to coincide with his formal political entry.
